Dear friend,
I paid $47.62 in fees last month to get paid five days sooner. I did not know I was paying it.
So today's letter says one thing. You are allowed to see the small money that leaves without asking. You are not required to do anything about it. Noticing is the whole permission.
Rent lands tomorrow. That is the reason I opened Stripe this morning at 6:14am, before my coffee was cold. I have a $912 rent payment scheduled for October 1 and I wanted to see if the client who paid me on Monday had cleared. She had. $840, less $24.51 in Stripe fees, sitting there with a little blue "Instant" button.
I have hit that Instant button 24 times in September. Every time it takes 1.5%. Sometimes $0.75. Sometimes $3.20 on a bigger invoice. My eyes stopped registering the number six or seven payouts ago because I was already thinking about what I was moving the money for. A phone bill. A booth day. A card minimum. Gas.
Last month it added up to $47.62. That is the leak.

THE BUTTON I STOPPED READING
|
|
I checked the app history because I wanted to see if the number was right. Stripe keeps every payout in a scrollable list, and the fee for each one is there in gray, one line down from the amount. I scrolled September.
The first Instant payout was on September 2. $180 came in from a Canva template pack. The fee was $2.70. I moved it because a Shopify subscription was renewing on the 3rd and I did not want to think about it. That is the reason every single time. I did not want to think about it.
The 24 payouts averaged $198. The 24 fees averaged $1.98. If I had waited the standard two business days on any of them, I would have kept the fee. Rent would still have arrived October 1. My phone bill would still have paid on the 15th. My car insurance would still have autopaid on the 22nd. I had a two-day buffer on every single one and I never used it.

THE SMALL PRICE OF NOT WAITING
|
|
The Instant Payout fee looks like a service. It says so on the button. It is not a service. It is a price for not waiting two days, sold in units small enough that they do not feel like a price at all.
Every payout app has one. Stripe is 1.5%. PayPal is 1.75% with a $10 cap. Venmo Business is 1.75%. Cash App is 0.5% to 1.75% depending on the transfer. Etsy has one on payment account balances. Uber Eats and DoorDash have driver versions. Every one of them was designed by someone who understood that waiting feels expensive when a rent number is on your calendar, and nothing else does.
That is not a rule against pressing the button. I will press it again tomorrow morning, because I want to. I will just see the $2.70 the second time.

|
It's only $2. I don't have time to wait.
It's $2. I have two days to wait, and I always have two days.

The fee is basically nothing.
The fee is basically nothing. Twenty-four of them are $47.

I need the money now.
I want the money now. Rent is not due until tomorrow.

Twelve lines to keep for the day. Screenshot the one that reads truest. Take it with you.

I see the small money leave. |
| 02 |
I look at the fee before I press. |
| 03 |
Two days from now is still soon enough. MOST TAKEN |
| 04 |
The number in gray counts. |
| 05 |
I open the app before I press. |
| 06 |
Every button has a price on it. |
| 07 |
Waiting is a thing I can do. |
| 08 |
I keep what I noticed. |
| 09 |
The receipt is part of the money. |
| 10 |
Rent lands on time either way. |
| 11 |
Small money is money I earned. |
| 12 |
I let the payout arrive slow. |

WHAT YOU'RE ALLOWED TO RECEIVE TODAY
|
|
I am not going to tell you to cancel your Instant Payouts. I am not going to tell you to open a spreadsheet, or to add up your September fees, or to promise your future self that October will be different. That is exactly the kind of instruction that made you stop looking at the number in the first place.
Today you are allowed to open the app. You can scroll one screen of payouts. You can see the small gray number under each amount, and see it without deciding anything about it. Nothing has to change because you saw it. You are also allowed to press Instant again tomorrow, on purpose, with your eyes on the fee, because you want the money in your account before rent moves. That is a different press than the one you did with your eyes closed.
The month ends today. Rent lands October 1. Some money you already earned is sitting in Stripe waiting for you, and it will be there whether you move it fast or slow. That is the whole permission for a Wednesday.

Open the door. Expect more. Let it find you. |

Keep the door open,
MONEY MAGNET

P.S. The client from Monday sent a follow-up at 5:47pm asking if she could pay the second half in two installments. I have not answered yet. I am still deciding whether the answer is yes, or a slightly higher price for the split.
